Translation of Humor: A study of the extent of humorous effect transference in the English renderings of anecdotes of Sa'di's Rose Garden
Abstract
This study aims at examining the English translation of humorous expressions in the anecdotes of Sa'di's Gulistan (Rose Garden) to 1) identify the type of translation strategies more-frequently used for rendering such expressions, and 2) measure the extent of translator's success to communicate the same humorous effect to the target language readers. To achieve this objective, the identified humorous expressions were classified according to Schmitz' categorization of humor (2002), i.e. universal humor, cultural-based humor, and language-based humor. Newmark's (1988) translation strategies were also considered as a framework for the analysis of the selected texts. As for procedures, the following steps were taken: first, the humorous expressions of a selection of anecdotes were extracted. Then, the corresponding English renderings of such expressions by Richard Francis Burton (1821-1890 CE ) and Francis Gladwin (1808) were identified and compared with their Persian originals to discover the translation strategies employed by the two translators.
